Onochie Osheokwu, Senior Special Assistant on Youth Development to Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, who resigned from his position to support Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi has opened up on the reason for his action.

Speaking in an interview with Punch, Osheokwu explained the reason for being so passionate about the Obidient movement that he had to resign from his position.

He stated that Obi has the right kind of mindset to move the country forward.

The former aide noted that Obi’s time as the Governor of Anambra state has proven that he is not someone that simply wants to play politics but has people at heart.

He said, “Obi’s record in Anambra schools is still there. Every Nigerian knows what Anambra used to be before Obi became the governor. The education system was transformed from the 26th position to the first. Even after he left office, that record remains because the foundation has been fixed. I know some people argue that there was a strike during Obi’s time as governor but that was because people were opposed to his new approach. Once you come out with a new approach, people will resist you. That was what he got; but with time, the people, not the elite, saw that his intention was genuine and the people adjusted to it. Today, that record still stands.”

Speaking on the woes plaguing the country, he lamented about the ongoing Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike which has paused the education of a lot of students.

He explained that he has been unable to attend any lectures in his master’s program due to the strike.

“For eight months now, Nigerian students have been out of school, sitting at home. As someone like me, I gained admission into the University of Benin for my master’s degree after the (COVID-19) lockdown. To date, I have not attended any lectures because of (the lecturer’s) strike. It’s almost two years since I got the admission and I have not even attended a single lecture. The education system is in a bad shape”, he added.

Speaking on his relationship with Okowa, The Obidient stalwart stated that he respects the governor as he has been carrying out his duties as the governor of Delta state but concerning the national level he thinks that Obi would do better.
