Two Killed, 12 Vehicles Ravaged As Fuel Tanker Explodes

The Ogun State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed the explosion of a fuel tanker at the Ilo Awela area of Sango Tollgate on the Lagos -Abeokuta expressway on Thursday morning.

The government agency in a statement through its Public Education Officer in the state, Florence Okpe, revealed that two people died in the tragic incident which happened in the early hours of today.

Okpe, who spoke with newsmen in Abeokuta, said at least three were injured while 12 vehicles were wrecked as a result of the incident.

โ€œFRSC carried out a rescue operation at about 1:30 am Thursday morning involving a Tanker laden with PMS while ascending Ilo Awela slope adjoining Abeokutaโ€“ Lagos section of the expressway, fell and went into flame.

โ€œMen of the fire service were contacted immediately and the area was cordoned to prevent secondary crashes.

โ€œAs at 4: 05 am, a total of 12 vehicles were involved. They comprised of three luxurious buses, four tricycles, three motorcycles, one yellow bus and a tankerโ€,ย Okpe explained.

The FRSC mouthpiece further disclosed that the three persons rescued in the incident were being treated at the Ota General Hospital.

Those who suffered injury according to the Okpe include two male adults and a female adult who was seriously burnt.

โ€œTwo bodies burnt beyond recognition have been evacuated from the scene. The suspected cause of the multiple crashes was mechanical deficiencyโ€,ย she added.
