The Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have been urged to come to an agreement in a bid to end the eight months old industrial actions by the aggrieved public varsity lecturers.

OsunDaily News reports that the admonition was given yesterday in Abuja by the Court of Appeal as the initial move for reconciliation ended in a deadlock.

Speaking on Wednesday in Abuja, a member of the panel of the appellate court, Justice Georgewill Biobele Abraham, urged the two bodies to end their dispute within 24 hours so Nigerians can be happy and appreciate them.

Justice Abraham charged the counsels to Federal Government and ASUU to first sit down as lawyers, take patriotic positions and convey the same to their clients.

“In fact, we expect to return to this court on Thursday with good news that the dispute has been thrashed out and all the appreciation of Nigerians will go to you,” he said.

OsunDaily News reports that public universities in the country have been shut down since February 14 over the non-implementation of agreements reached with the government.

The academic union had appealed a ruling of the National Industrial Court compelling it to call off the strike.

Strike: CONUA Sends Message To ASUU After FG Registration

The Congress of Nigerian Universities Academics (CONUA) on Wednesday appealed to ASUU to reach an amicable agreement with the federal government over the lingering strike action by the union.

CONUA lamented the impact of the ASUU strike action which has kept students and lecturers of Nigeria’s public universities at home for about eight months.

Speaking during a TV interview on Wednesday, CONUA National Coordinator, Niyi Sunmonu said it is time to find a solution so students and lecturers can return to the classrooms.

He however said his own faction has not been on strike but they are not able to teach.

“We’ve not been on strike, we just appeal to the Federal Government and our sister union (ASUU) to reach an amicable agreement so that the universities can be open so that we can go back to doing our teachings,” Sunmonu, said on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily.

OsunDaily News recalls amidst the crisis in the education sector, the Muhammadu Buhari-led Government on Tuesday presented a certificate of recognition and registration to the Congress of Nigerian University Academics (CONUA).

CONUA is a breakaway faction of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The presentation was done on behalf of the government, by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige at the Conference Room of the Ministry, Federal Secretariat, Phase 1, Abuja.
