The Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, says a capacity voltage transformer explosion caused the fire incident at its 131/33kV substation in Maryland.
Ndidi Mbah, General Manager of Public Affairs, TCN, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.
The explanation comes hours after a fire razed Maryland’s substation on Saturday, resulting in darkness in the affected locations.
“The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) hereby states that at about 7:57 pm on Saturday, 16th December 2023, a fire occurred following a capacitor voltage transformer explosion on the Maryland-Ikorodu 132/33kV.
“The substation was restored back into service.
“TCN regrets the inconveniences the incident caused electricity consumers taking supply from Maryland Transmission Substation and notes that it is diligently pursuing the reconductoring/rehabilitating of all its 132kV transmission lines and switchgear nationwide, which would greatly help eliminate such incidents”.
Meanwhile, experts in the power sector blamed obsolete transmission equipment and lack of maintenance as reasons for the fire incident.
Recall that in September 2023, fire also gutted the Kebbi substation.
