Popular Nigerian Disk Jockey, DJ Neptune, recently shared insights on why some artists struggle financially, particularly highlighting the lack of financial planning during their peak years in the music industry.
Speaking as a guest on the Zero Conditions Podcast, Neptune emphasized the importance of managing money wisely and warned against reckless spending.
โArtistes feel fame is forever; thatโs why some of them, while they are at their peak, donโt save up their money, they donโt invest,โ Neptune explained.
He recounted a conversation where someone mentioned how some artists spend their advance payments on expensive cars, like a Benz. Neptune called this a short-sighted move, saying, โIs that not your future youโre driving?โ
Having collaborated with top artists Neptune described this mentality as a โreality checkโ for many in the industry.
He stressed that fame is fleeting, and without smart financial decisions, many artists could find themselves in trouble once their popularity fades.
Neptune advised his peers to invest wisely while at the top, particularly suggesting property investments or side businesses as ways to create additional income.
โThatโs why I tell some of my colleagues, while you are on top, invest your money. If itโs properties you want to do, just have a side income,โ he advised.
He noted that only a select few are able to maintain their careers for more than a decade, and without the ability to adapt, many artists could lose their way.
โIt is only a few of us that have the grace to be in the game for more than five, ten years. You are appealing to a certain age group, and if you donโt know how to tone down and switch, you might have missed your way,โ Neptune concluded, urging artists to plan for their future.
