Belgian winger Yannick Carrasco has slammed his national teammate Thibaut Courtois over the Real Madrid manโs reaction to their captaincy issues.
Carrasco said that Courtois should not have responded to the managerโs comments and should have understood his position.
Belgium boss Domenico Tedesco recently said that Courtois was unhappy with his decision to name Romelu Lukaku as the teamโs captain for Belgiumโs Euro 2024 qualifier against Austria.
The manager believed that it was for this reason that the goalkeeper refused to travel with the squad.
Tedesco said that his plan was to hand the Real Madrid goalkeeper the captaincy in the next game against Estonia.
The comments drew a heated response from Courtois, who said he was โdeeply disappointedโ in the coach for his โpartial and subjective account of a private conversation.โ
And speaking to RTBF in Belgium, Carrasco said he was surprised by Courtoisโ actions.
โWe are disappointed by their reaction. In the end, he is part of the team; he is one of the three captains. An armband is just a detail.
โYou have to show that you are a leader and a captain with your personality. He chose to leave. He had problems or not, we didnโt know. But one of the reasons for his departure was also the armband,โ Carrasco said.
