The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) says it will collaborate with Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to provide emergency support for victims of flooding in the state.

UNICEF’s Emergency Manager, Christiana Valderrama, stated this during a visit to the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).

She emphasized on the importance of understanding risks, opportunities and challenges related to flooding, particularly those happening due to the overflow of Tiga Dam.

She said UNICEF will collaborate with SEMA and other stakeholders working on emergency responses to help the flooding victims in the state.

She said, “UNICEF plans to support the government through SEMA in providing assistance to flood victims. The funding, part of the European Union’s humanitarian aid, will provide cash transfers to 5,000 families in the state.

“We had a workshop with all stakeholders in November, and we would like to see the state flood contingency plan finalized.

“This will ensure a common understanding and mapping of people who may be affected by floods.”

Dr Haruna Mairiga, Executive Secretary of SEMA, appreciated UNICEF’s gesture and assured them of accurate and accountable distribution of the cash transfer meant for flood victims.

Mairiga noted that the annual flooding in the state has resulted in the death of many people, as well as destruction of farmlands and properties worth billions of Naira.

He however advised those living along the riverine to relocate to avoid future occurrences.
