Good morning Nigeria. Welcome to the OsunDaily roundup of top newspaper headlines in Nigeria for today, Sunday, 22nd June, 2025.
Former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, has berated the spate of killings of innocent people across Nigeria in recent times.
In a statement released via his official 𝕏 handle on Saturday evening, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (PDP), regretted the death of about five people in a recent bomb explosion that occurred in Kano.
Obi also recalled that about twelve wedding guests were killed on Friday by gunmen in Plateau State, with many others injured.
He regretted that the regularity of bloodletting of innocent souls in Nigeria has reduced the news value of human deaths.
According to him, when Nigerians speak about addressing some of the issues bedevilling the country, including the constant killings, and the corruption that has entrenched the system, they are accused of demarketing the nation.
The Director of the Abuja School of Social and Political Thought, Sam Amadi, says President Bola Tinubu has always found it difficult to work with deputies.
He therefore pointed out that it would not be surprising if President Tinubu decides to drop Vice President Kashim Shettima as his running mate for the 2027 election.
Amadi added that the omission of Shettima from the 2027 endorsements by the All Progressives Congress (APC) could be a pointer to the direction the party might be headed and a lesson in the harsh reality of politics.
OsunDaily reports that the public commentator made the submission in a chat with Arise TV on Saturday where he spoke against the backdrop of the chaos that rupted during the APC Northeast stakeholders meeting in Gombe State in which President Tinubu was endorsd for a second term in office on the party’s ticket without any mention of Shettima as his running mate.
Amadi recalled that President Tinubu had three deputies during his tenure as Lagos State Governor, so dropping Shettima might also follow similar trends.
A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kaduna State, Mallam Suleiman Salisu, has warned Nigerians to be wary of former Governor, Nasir El-Rufai.
OsunDaily reports that Salisu, in an interview with Daily Post, expressed dismay at El-Rufai’s utterances for criticising President Bola Tinubu’s government after causing serious division in the state.
Salisu also raised concerns over how some politicians, including El-Rufai, who held sensitive offices in the country, now criticise the present administration after their woeful performances while in office.
Recalling El-Rufai’s past deeds, the APC chieftain said Nigerians must wake up from their slumber and sincerely seek those who would salvage the country from selfish politicians who are after them and end up causing disaffection in the land.
According to him, the challenges facing Nigerians are sufficient to prompt them to seek reasonable leaders who can help them out of the present quagmire.
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has rubbished reports that the coalition against President Bola Tinubu had formally applied to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register a new party named All Democratic Alliance (ADA).
OsunDaily reports that Keyamo, in a post via 𝕏, on Friday, June 20, 2025, dismissed the move as overhyped and lacking political substance.
The Minister stated that if the top politicians backing the anti-coalition are thinking of recreating what the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) did in 2013, then it is nothing but a pedestrian joke.
According to Keyamo, no recognised political parties were involved in the application process, unlike the APC.
He added that the group behind the ADA registration comprises only a few individuals exercising their constitutional right, which does not equate to a merger or coalition of parties.
Former presidential adviser and a prominent member of the national ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC), Okoi Obono-Obla, has asserted that the indiscriminate acceptance of defectors from other opposition parties constitutes a significant error.
OsunDaily reports that in recent months, there has been a surge of defectors joining the APC, particularly from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
In a statement on Friday, Obono-Obla voiced concerns that the new members, who lack a solid understanding of the foundational principles that established the APC, are likely to create ongoing conflicts within the party.
He stated that by welcoming a large number of defectors, the APC has marginalised loyal founding members who made considerable sacrifices to unite the legacy parties in 2013.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has predicted that some governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the near future.
Speaking on Saturday during the grand reception to welcome Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State to APC, Akpabio said Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State and Duoye Diri of Bayelsa State may be next to join the APC.
He also commended the Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, for the bold decision to dump the PDP for the APC.
“Governor Umo Eno, after you, who knows Rivers State will tumble, after Rivers State, Bayelsa will join and of course, we won the election in Edo State,” Akpabio declared.
The Senate President added that in 2027, the entire South-South would be united in support of President Bola Tinubu and the APC.
“Henceforth, come 2027, the South South will go one way, and the South South will vote for President Tinubu,” Akpabio stated.
He added that the people of Akwa Ibom are fully in support of the decision by Governor Eno to dump the PDP for the APC.
The Vice President of Nigeria, Kashim Shettima, has vowed that terrorists would not be allowed to threaten the peace and security in the country.
Shettima gave the assurance in a statement on Saturday in which he reacted to the suicide bombing attack that led to deaths at a local food joint in Konduga Local Government Area of Borno State on Friday night.
The Vice President described the action of the suicide bombers as senseless and a heinous act of terrorism against innocent civilians.
OsunDaily recalls that a suspected suicide bomber affiliated with Boko Haram claimed the lives of at least 10 individuals in a tragic assault at a bustling fish market located in the Konduga Local Government Area of Borno State.
The attack occurred on Friday night when the bomber, posing as a civilian, infiltrated the market and set off an explosive device.
In his reaction, Shettima condemned the attack and urged relevant government agencies to ensure that victims and families of the deceased receive urgent support.
While commiserating with all those affected, the Vice President also assured that the perpetrators would be brought to justice.
The mother-in-law of Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), Hajiya Zainab Hussain, has passed away.
OsunDaily reports that Marwa is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA)
Hajiya Hussain, who is the mother of Hajiya Munira Marwa, wife of the NDLEA boss, died in the early hours of Saturday, June 21, 2025, in Abuja. She was 76 years old.
The funeral prayer (Janazah) will be held today, Saturday, June 21, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at the National Mosque in Abuja.
She will be laid to rest immediately after at Gwarinpa Cemetery.
Nollywood award-winning make-up artist, Hakeem Onilogbo, popularly known as Hakeem Effect, has opened up on the challenges of having children before opting for surrogacy.
OsunDaily reports that Hakeem, in an interview with his colleague, Biola Adebayo, on the YouTube podcast ‘Talk to B’, recalled the accusation levelled against him following his wife’s inability to conceive.
He said that people will always remind him about his wife’s struggle with infertility, and at some point, accused him of using his wife’s womb for fame because his life changed for the better after their marriage.
Hakeem said they opted for surrogacy due to the constant bullying and pressure, but God came through for them when their surrogate mother was six months pregnant.
Barcelona’s young talent, Lamine Yamal, has firmly rejected any suggestion that he attempted to connect with Claudia Bavel, a former adult film actress.
Yamal made this statement in response to Bavel’s recent assertions regarding an alleged relationship with him.
OsunDaily reports that the controversy began when Bavel claimed to have communicated with Yamal, who allegedly urged her to meet him.
In a recent interview with TardeAR, Bavel stated that the Spanish winger had last contacted her through a mutual acquaintance.
She also mentioned that she had encountered the 17-year-old footballer at various parties but refrained from having any private interactions with him, as she did not wish to become involved “with a minor.”
Nevertheless, Yamal has categorically denied all of Bavel’s claims. The Barcelona player asserted that he has never met Bavel in person.

Kwara: PDP warns members against associating with coalition

Kwara State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has warned members and supporters of the party not to associate with the coalition movement in the state.
A statement by secretary of the party, Abdulrahman Abdullahi Kayode, in Ilorin on Tuesday, disclosed that the party is aware of “attempts by certain individuals and political actors to lure our members and supporters into the newly formed coalition movement”.
“We wish to categorically state that the PDP, particularly in Kwara State under the leadership of Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, has no affiliation whatsoever with the coalition being spearheaded by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar or any other group outside the established structure of our great party,” the statement stressed.
The party urged its members and supporters across the state to remain vigilant and not be deceived or misled by the antics of “stranded and unpopular” politicians who, having deserted the party, are now seeking relevance by falsely using Saraki’s name to win support for their new political adventure.
“These individuals had either left or were irrelevant within the party during the September 2024 local government elections, yet despite their absence, our party triumphed at the polls, a testament to the unwavering support we continue to enjoy from the people of Kwara State, regardless of the manipulation of results by the ruling party.
“If they are truly confident in their popularity and acceptance among the people, they should campaign based on their own track records and not hide behind the name and legacy of our leader,” the party declared.
The statement asserted that Saraki remains a proud and committed member of the PDP and is actively involved in efforts to reposition and unify the party in preparation for a successful outing in the 2027 general elections.
“The PDP in Kwara remains united, focused, and loyal to its ideals. We advise all our members to disregard any invitation or pressure to join the so-called coalition and remain steadfast under the banner of the PDP,” it added.

Lagos court jails pastor 25 years for having sex with biological teenage daughter

A 45-year-old man, Ndukwe Ogbu, who claimed to be a pastor, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison by the Ikeja Special Offences Court in Lagos.
The conviction stemmed from his sexual abuse of his biological daughter on multiple occasions when she was just 14 years old.
Delivering the judgment, Justice Olubunmi Abike-Fadipe held that the prosecution had proven the three-count charge of defilement, sexual assault, and sexual assault by penetration beyond reasonable doubt.
The court convicted Ogbu based on the testimonies of the victim, a medical expert, and a social worker, all of whom corroborated the allegations.
During sentencing, the judge noted that the convict did not show remorse, as his plea for leniency was based on having other children to care for.
“From the evidence before the court, the defendant is found guilty on all three counts. He is sentenced to three years’ imprisonment on count one and 25 years each on counts two and three. The sentences are to run concurrently and will take effect from December 2019, the date of his remand,” Justice Abike-Fadipe ruled.
The prosecution, led by the Lagos State Government, arraigned the convict in February 2021. The trial began in October of the same year, during which three prosecution witnesses testified, including the survivor, a social worker, and a medical doctor. The defendant testified alone in his defence.
The social worker, Femi Oyeleke, told the court that the matter was brought to his attention by a schoolteacher to whom the survivor had confided. He then reported the case to the police.
The survivor also gave detailed testimony, identifying Ogbu as her father and recounting how the abuse started when she was 14. She said he warned her not to tell anyone, but she eventually informed her teacher.
Ogbu denied all the allegations, maintaining that he was not present at the times stated by his daughter.
He acknowledged living in the same apartment but said the girl had her own room. He told the court that his wife had passed away when the children were young and that the others lived with their maternal grandmother in the village.
