Tobi Amusan has failed to successfully defend her women’s 100-meter hurdles world title at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

In the 2022 edition of the World Athletics Championships in Oregon, Tobi Amusan stunned the world when she won the semi-finals in 12.12 seconds which is a world record to date.

The 26-year-old athlete went on to win the edition by running wind-aided 12.06secs in the final to become the first Nigerian to win 100-meter hurdles at the World Athletics Championship.

Ahead of the 2023 World Athletics Championships, the AIU banned her for allegedly failing a drug test three times in 12 months, halting her hope of successfully defending her title.

Fortunately for her, the regulation body cleared her on time for the competition and she put the setback behind her to stun the world for the second successive year.

Tobi Amusan made it to the finals on Wednesday, beating Jamaican Ackera Nugent to the first spot in 12.56 seconds.

In the final earlier today, August 24, 2023, Amusan faced American former world record holder Kendra Harrison, who won the first semi-finals in 12.33secs, and Olympic champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn, who won the last semi-finals in 12.41secs.

To the dismay of most Nigerians, Tobi Amusan failed to defend her title. Amusan finished 6th as Danielle Williams of Jamaica emerged victorious. Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rican finished second, while Kendra Harrison of the United States finished third.
