Three-year-old boy dies after falling into open soakaway in Lagos

A three-year-old boy, Chibuike Uba, has died after falling into an uncovered soakaway in the Babarinsa area of Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos State.
The heartbreaking event happened on Wednesday when Chibuike’s mother, Utoro, visited her aunt in the community from her residence in the Epe area of the state.
It was gathered that the young mother was packing her belongings to return home when her son left the room to join his aunt, who had stepped outside to make a phone call.
Upon her return, the aunt inquired about the child’s whereabouts, assuming he had gone back inside. However, Chibuike was nowhere to be found, prompting an immediate search.
During the search, Utoro discovered her son’s slippers beside an uncovered soakaway located in a neighbouring compound.
The property reportedly lacks fencing, allowing easy access to the hazardous pit. She immediately raised an alarm and efforts were made to rescue the child.
Utoro recounted the ordeal in an emotional tone to our correspondent on Thursday, saying:
“I visited my aunt and was packing my bags to head back home when she received a call and my son followed her outside. I continued packing, assuming he was still with her.
“When she came back inside, I asked about my son’s whereabouts, and she claimed he had returned inside. I said no and quickly rushed outside to search for him but couldn’t find him.
“That was when I noticed his slippers near the soakaway on the next compound beside the house because it has no fence. I immediately shouted that my baby was inside the soakaway. That was how we quickly made efforts to pull him out and rushed him to the hospital.”
Chibuike was initially taken to a nearby private hospital in the Sapati area, where he was referred to the General Hospital in Akodo. Despite being placed on oxygen upon arrival, medical personnel later confirmed his death.
Utoro blamed negligence for the incident, alleging that her aunt had previously warned the landlord about the danger posed by the open soakaway. She said the warnings went unheeded.
“My aunt called the man and said she had repeatedly warned him to close the soakaway, but he kept promising to.
“Even the plank that my aunt used to cover it was damaged by the flood. As I speak to you, the soakaway is still open,” she said.

May God heal Nigeria from trauma – Southern Kaduna Christian leaders mourn late Buhari

The Southern Kaduna Christian Leaders Association, SKCLA, has extended its condolences to the family of the late President Muhammadu Buhari and to the Federal Republic of Nigeria on his demise.
It’s chairman, Apostle Dr Emmanuel Nuhu Kure, in a statement prayed, “May God heal this nation from the traumas of the past and raise leaders who will truly serve all Nigerians with justice, equity, and truth, not favouring one part of the country over another.”
It added, “As a body that speaks onbehalf of a deeply wounded people, we must express the truth without pretense or political correctness. President Buhari’s second term in office stands out in our memory as one of the darkest and toughest eras for the Southern Kaduna people.
“Under his watch, our communities were subjected to unchecked violence, persecution, and marginalization, while the federal government remained either indifferent or complicit through silence.”
The statement said it “remembers with nostalgia his first coming as Nigeria’s military Head of State in 1984–1985”, saying that during that brief period, there was a determined effort to sanitise the Nigerian system, instill national discipline, confront corruption and restore national pride.
The statement explained that the nostalgia of 1984/85 still lives with many of them in spite of the flaws it came with, pointing out that Buhari made them feel that Nigerians can adapt to discipline with the right leadership in place.
It prayed that God will heal the nation from the traumas of the past and raise leaders who will truly serve all Nigerians with justice, equity, and truth, not favouring one part of the country over another.

Buhari’s Death: Nigerian civil servants extend condolences to Tinubu

Nigerian civil servants, through the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, have commiserated with President Bola Tinubu on the passing of former President, Muhammadu Buhari.
Buhari died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in the United Kingdom.
The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs Didi Esther Walson-Jack, on behalf of the civil servants expressed heartfelt condolences to Tinubu.
They also commiserated with the family of the late Buhari and the Government and people of Katsina State.
“President Buhari’s legacy is firmly etched in the annals of Nigeria’s history as a statesman who led with distinction, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to national service,” a statement signed by Walson-Jack said.
“From his stewardship as Military Head of State (1984–1985), to his tenure as a democratically elected President (2015–2023), he remained a symbol of integrity and patriotic dedication.
“His administration achieved notable milestones in public sector reform, particularly through the implementation of the Federal Civil Service Strategy and Implementation Plan 2017–2020 (FCSSIP-20) and its successor, the FCSSIP 2021–2025.
“These efforts enhanced transparency, strengthened the anti-corruption framework, expanded social investment programmes, and accelerated infrastructure renewal across the country.
“His enduring impact on the Civil Service, marked by the promotion of efficiency, accountability, and the digitilisation of government operations continues to drive administrative transformation.
“The Nigerian Public Service solemnly reflects on the loss of a leader whose values and principles redefined governance. President Buhari’s belief in merit, order, and the rule of law, laid a foundation upon which current reforms stand.
“As we honour his memory, we are comforted by the enduring influence of his ideals on our collective journey toward a more transparent, disciplined, and citizen-focused Civil Service.
“We pray for the peaceful repose of his soul and for divine strength and comfort to his family, the Government, and the people of Nigeria at this moment of national mourning.”
