In an exciting showdown, Nigeria’s Super Eagles will take on the Benin Republic at 8 p.m. tonight, November 14, in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, marking their third encounter in just six months as both teams aim to secure their spots for the 2025 AFCON.

The Super Eagles previously triumphed over the Cheetahs with a convincing 3-0 victory in the first leg held at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, in September.

Now, they are looking to strengthen their position at Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny, a familiar ground for the Benin Republic. A victory will solidify Nigeria’s path to the tournament in Morocco in 2025.

While a draw would suffice for Nigeria to advance, the team is keen to avoid a repeat of their 2-1 loss at this same venue during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in June.

Currently perched at the top of Group D with 10 points, the Super Eagles stand four points ahead of their second-placed rivals, who must secure a win to stay in contention for the second automatic qualifying spot.

This critical matchup will undoubtedly spark a competitive spirit on the pitch, officiated by Senegalese referee Issa Sy.

Coach Austin Eguavoen’s squad has had an impressive run, winning three of their four matches without conceding any goals. Under the guidance of former Nigeria coach Genort Rohr, the Benin Republic will be aiming to bounce back from previous setbacks, knowing that further losses could jeopardize their chances.

William Troost-Ekong, the Super Eagles defender and 2023 AFCON Most Valuable Player, who missed the earlier matchup, expressed confidence in the team’s ability to perform well.

He emphasized the familiarity with the stadium and the determination to avenge June’s defeat while securing a vital win.

Rohr acknowledged the challenge the Eagles pose now that they are fully strengthened but remains hopeful for his team’s performance. He commented, “Repeating the feat of June is going to be complicated because Nigeria is now at full strength, but we believe in ourselves.”

Eguavoen, in contrast, enjoys a full roster to choose from and looks to qualify with a game to spare. He is likely to field a strong team similar to the one that faced Libya, featuring Captain William Ekong and Calvin Bassey in central defence, with wing-backs Olaoluwa Aina and Bruno Onyemaechi. Bright Osayi-Samuel’s return to the backline further enhances their strength.

With midfield options including Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi, and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, along with attacking talents like Victor Osimhen and Kelechi Iheanacho, the team is well-prepared for tonight’s challenge.
