After suffering a 4-0 humiliating defeat at the hands of Japan in their last group stage game, Spain have found themselves in the quarter-finals of the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
The Spanish team that finish second in Group C, three points behind first-placed Japan, met with Switzerland that finished top of their group in the round of 16 on Saturday, August 5.
The round of 16 clash which took place at the Eden Park Outer Oval in Auckland, New Zealand, ended as a whitewash for the Swiss team as Spain ended the game with 13 goals in just four matches.
In front of 43,217 spectators, Spain made their way to the 2023 Women’s World Cup quarter-finals with a massive 5-1 win over Switzerland that didn’t concede any goal in the group stage.

Aitana Bonmati gave the Spanish women the lead in the 5th minute, but Switzerland equalized in the 11th minute thanks to Laia Codina’s back ball which past her own keeper and into the net from 10 yards.
Alba Redondo’s header gave Spain their advantage back shortly after, and Barcelona midfielder Bonmati made it 3-1 with a superb finish.
In a remarkable first half, Codina made up for her own goal by scoring Spain’s fourth goal following a flurry inside the penalty area.
After the break, Jennifer Hermoso scored her third goal of the competition with a precise finish.
In the quarter-finals on Friday, August 11, Jorge Vilda’s team will face the winner of Sunday’s match between the Netherlands and South Africa in Wellington, New Zealand.
