The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has announced that search and recovery efforts are ongoing following Thursday’s Sikorsky SK76 helicopter crash off the coast of Port Harcourt in Rivers State.

Additional diving equipment and resources are set to be deployed to aid in the extended operations.

OsunDailyNG reports that crash occurred at approximately 11:22 a.m. near Bonny Finima. The aircraft carried eight people—six passengers and two crew members—at the time of the incident. To date, five bodies have been recovered, while three individuals remain missing.

In an update issued late on Friday, the NSIB reported that search operations had been suspended around 6:15 p.m. due to limited daylight. Despite thorough efforts, no further debris, survivors, or bodies were recovered during the day’s search.

The statement, signed by NSIB spokesperson Mrs. Bimbo Oladeji, noted that divers successfully established a secure perimeter around the anticipated wreckage site, located at a depth of 40 to 50 meters, which will guide Saturday’s planned operations.

NSIB Director General, Captain Alex Badeh Jr., expressed gratitude for the relentless dedication of the combined rescue teams and supporting partners, affirming that “every necessary resource” will be employed in the search.

He also conveyed appreciation for the cooperation and patience shown by all stakeholders.

The NSIB pledged to provide timely updates as investigations progress and is committed to a thorough and transparent analysis of the incident.

The agency stated that further information will be released as it becomes available.
