The Katsina State Government has freed 222 inmates who could not pay fines imposed on them by different courts of law ahead of Sallah celebration.
The State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, said the aim is to alleviate the burden of inmates across the stateโs correctional facilities during the holy month of Ramadan and the forthcoming Sallah festivities.
The stateโs Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Fadila Muhammad Dikko, disclosed this in a statement.
The 222 beneficiaries, she said, were selected after a thorough verification, following recommendations to the state government for intervention.
โThe Governorโs benevolent act is expected to reduce congestion in these facilities and enable the freed inmates to partake in the joyous occasion of Sallah with their loved ones,โ Fadila said.
While appreciating Governor Radda for the initiative, the Katsina Attorney-General disclosed that the beneficiaries were selected from among inmates incarcerated for minor commercial and non-capital offenses.
