The Nigeria Medical Association, NMA, says doctors are exempted from the nationwide strike ordered by the Organized Labour.

The Rivers State Chairman of NMA, Doctor Ebbi Robinson, in a chat with DAILY POST clarified that NMA is not part of the NLC.

DAILY POST however got a hint that other health unions in the state, including those in the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, UPTH, like the Joint Health Sector Unions, JOHESU, may join the strike.

The leadership of JOHESU in UPTH is yet to respond to calls from DAILY POST to confirm if the union is part of the strike.

In the meantime, the strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC and the Trade Union Congress, TUC, has taken a new face in Rivers State.

This is because government owned primary and secondary schools were shutdown on Wednesday in compliance with the NLC/TUC directive , while banks have remained closed.

Government owned schools were in operation on Tuesday. Some teachers had said they were waiting for a directive from State Ministry of Education.

The NLC Taskforce in Rivers State had reportedly gone to schools to enforce the strike by its members.

The Organized Labour is on strike to get the Federal Government to respond to its demands following an assault on NLC President, Joe Ajaeeo, in Imo State.
