Spanish La Liga giants, Real Madrid, have confirmed that the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois has ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament of his left knee.
Thibaut Courtois has been so prolific for Real Madrid since he moved from Premier League side Chelsea to the Spanish La Liga side for a transfer fee worth €35 million on August 9, 2018.
Since then, the 31-year-old Belgian goalkeeper has helped the club to win one UEFA Champions League title, two FIFA Club World Cups, two Spanish La Liga titles, one UEFA Super Cup, one Spanish Cup, and two Spanish Super Cups.
Courtois whose current contract with the Spanish La Liga giants will expire on June 30, 2026, has played 230 times in all competitions in which he conceded 219 goals and kept 91 clean sheets.
Unfortunately for the Belgium international, he would not be available for Real Madrid’s opening La Liga match against Athletic Club at 8 p.m. on Saturday, August 12.
A statement from the club earlier today, August 10, confirmed that Thibaut Courtois will undergo surgery to treat the broken ACL.
The club’s statement read, “After the tests carried out on our player Thibaut Courtois, he’s been diagnosed with a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament of his left knee. The player will undergo surgery in the coming days”.
Based on this development which could keep Courtois out of football for months, Italian transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano, tweeted, “Real Madrid are prepared to enter the market for a new goalkeeper, looking for an opportunity to cover Courtois’s absence.”
