The president of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and his wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, are reportedly scheduled to host the Super Falcons of Nigeria when they arrive in Abuja this week.
On Monday, August 7, the Super Falcons faced the Lionesses of England in the round of 16 at the 2023 Womenโs World Cup hosted by Australia and New Zealand. After 120 minutes of football, including 30 minutes of extra time, the game was settled by penalty shootouts.
During the penalty shootout, Englandโs Georgia Stanway missed her spot-kick, and two Nigerian players, Desire Oparanozie and Michelle Alozie, missed theirs as the Lionesses beat the Falcons 4-2 at the end of the shootouts.
Even though the Super Falcons failed to reach the quarter-finals of the tournament, Nigerians have been very pleased with their performance including President Tinubu and his wife, hence, they have decided to host them in appreciation of their heroic performance.
OsunDailyNG has reported that President Tinubu took to his verified Twitter page to appreciate the girls after England knocked them out of the tournament via penalties.
The President tweeted: โI must commend the effort by our Super Falcons @NGSuper_Falcons at the FIFA Womenโs World Cup.โ
โYour brilliant performance did not go unnoticed despite the final outcome. You made Nigeria proud on the global stage!โ
Also, the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, shared a message to praise the 11-time African champions and noted that the Nigerian team gave the Lionesses โa run for their moneyโ.
She said, โI want to say that they played very well and we are proud of them. We gave England a run for their money and so we will be waiting to receive them.
โThe match wasnโt easy for England. It was like a bonus to them and they really played fine soccer.โ
