The Kano Electricity Distribution Company, KEDCO, has expressed concerns that the state is in darkness because of the serious shortfall in the supply of power to the state from the Federal Government.
Abubakar Yusuf, the Managing Director, KEDCO said while speaking to the Press, on Tuesday, that Kano is not an exception as the issue of power supply shortage touches Nigeria as a whole.
He noted that Kano requires 600 megawatts daily to have a 24-hour power supply, but receives only 180 megawatts which is below its requirements, leading to low shedding in the state.
โWe have three franchise areas, Kano, Katsina and Jigawa, our main responsibility is to distribute what they receive from the government, and Nigerians should understand that within the value chain, there is where the power comes fromโ.
The Managing Director, also informed that KEDCO has apprehended six vandals of power equipment and is taking them to Court to face their charges.
He expressed worry that every day, vandalization takes place on KEDCO, the heinous act helps in plunging the state into darkness.
โUnderpayment and energy thefts by customers also contribute to liquidity problems in the power sector.
โBut let me say that the main problem is that there is inadequate power supply nationwide and a lack of gas availability
resulting in load shedding.
