Panic as suspected cult clashes kill three in Lagos

An atmosphere of fear and uncertainty has gripped residents and business owners in the Ebute Meta area of Lagos State following a series of suspected cult-related attacks that left three people dead within two days.
The violent incidents reportedly occurred between Sunday and Monday, resulting in the deaths of three people identified by their nicknames, Agbara, Butcher, and a yet-to-be-identified plumber.
According to multiple eyewitnesses, the first killing took place on Sunday along Lagos Street, where Agbara was reportedly ambushed and brutally murdered.
Residents discovered his lifeless body later that evening, bearing several deep machete wounds.
“I was inside when I heard people running and screaming. I stepped out to see what was going on and was told someone was under attack.
“By the time we got to the scene, we found Agbara’s body on the ground, with multiple machete cuts,” a resident, who requested anonymity, told our correspondent.
The violence escalated the following day, as two more people were murdered in what locals believe was a retaliatory attack. One of the victims, known as Butcher, was found dead in the Makoko area.
“News of Butcher’s death broke early Monday. He was attacked the previous night. We found his body wrapped in a cloth near Makoko. He had deep cuts on his neck.
“People called him Butcher because his father sells meat. He left behind a pregnant wife,” another resident recounted.
The third victim, a plumber whose name remains unknown, was reportedly attacked and killed near the Abeokuta Street bridge.
“Initially, people assumed he was being punished for a financial dispute, as he was dragged along the street. It wasn’t until later that his body was found under the bridge with his throat slit.
“This violence must stop, we need the police to take immediate action to restore peace,” said a concerned local.
Community sources believe the killings stem from an ongoing clash between rival cult groups operating in the area.
Reacting to the incidents, the Lagos State Police Command has taken decisive steps to curb the growing threat of cult violence.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the state Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, announced the deployment of Anti-Cultism Squads across all Area Commands within the state.
Hundeyin stated that the squads are fully equipped and mandated to respond swiftly to cult-related disturbances.
Their duties include intelligence gathering, responding to emergency calls, arresting suspects, and collaborating with residents to dismantle cult networks.

My farm is no longer safe – ADC spokesman raises alarm over insecurity

The Interim National Publicity Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Bolaji Abdullahi, has raised concerns about the rising insecurity in Nigeria, saying bandits have taken over his farmland.
Speaking to journalists in Ilorin, Mr. Abdullahi said he could no longer visit his farm in parts of Kwara State like Patigi, Ifelodun, and Babanla because of the growing activities of kidnappers and bandits in the areas.
He said, “Kwara State used to be one of the most peaceful states in Nigeria, but now, it’s no longer safe. I have a farm in that area, and I can’t go there anymore because of insecurity.”
Mr. Abdullahi blamed the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for the current challenges facing the country.
He said the party’s poor policies had made life harder for Nigerians.
He added that the ADC was created to offer a better alternative and bring an end to poverty, hunger, and insecurity in the country.
He said, “Nigerians are already suffering. People know they can’t continue like this. The real work now is to convince them that we, in ADC, are truly different and can fix these problems.”

Aisha was divorced from Buhari before he died – Farooq Kperogi

A Professor of Journalism and Emerging Media at Kennesaw State University, Farooq Kperogi, has alleged that Aisha was no longer married to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Kperogi made this claim in a post on his verified Facebook page on Wednesday.
According to him, Aisha had dropped Buhari as her surname and reverted to her maiden name, Halilu.
He further alleged that Aisha was reluctant to travel to the United Kingdom to care for Buhari when he became ill.
Kperogi was reacting to quotes attributed to Aisha, which claimed Buhari had asked her to seek forgiveness from Nigerians on his behalf.
Although Kperogi said he could not confirm the authenticity of the quotes, he maintained that the couple were no longer married.
He wrote: “They had divorced, and Aisha reverted to her maiden name, Aisha Halilu. If you paid close attention, you would notice that Aisha didn’t go to Daura when he retired to the town after leaving office.
“Buhari was also alone when he later relocated to Kaduna. In fact, when he fell ill and it was suggested that Aisha travel to London to care for him, she reportedly hesitated because she was no longer his wife.”

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has said it will appeal the judgement of the Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos, which acquitted and discharged former Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, of alleged N6.9 billion fraud.
This was contained in a statement issued via the anti-graft agency’s official X handle on Wednesday.
OSUNDAILY NG reports that the court on Wednesday discharged and acquitted Fayose of all charges in the long-running N6.9 billion money laundering case filed against him by the EFCC.
“Sequel to the judgement of Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke of the Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, acquitting and discharging a former Governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Ayo Fayose from an alleged money laundering case preferred against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, the Commission wishes to state that it is already studying the ruling and preparing for an appeal.
“The former governor was re-arraigned on Tuesday, July 2, 2019, alongside Spotless Investment Limited on an 11-count charge bordering on money laundering and stealing to the tune of N6.9bn,” the agency said in the statement.
