The National President of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Titus Audu Amba, has demanded that only seasoned educationists should be appointed to head the education sector in the country.
Speaking to newsmen in Kaduna on Thursday, Amba said failure of government at all levels to put seasoned educationists in charge of the sector has undermined the development of education in Nigeria.
“Until we are able to put the right people at the right place in the country, we will continue to have problems and things will never work the way we want them to be,” he said.
He lamented that the country has a long way to go in education, adding that the sector need proper attention from the government.
The NUT leader blamed the situation on poor planning, lamenting that Nigerians hardly plan ahead, a development which he said has affected all levels of education in the country.
Noting that teaching is the most relegated profession in the country, he said the N30,000 minimum wage introduced about five years ago has not been enjoyed by teachers in some states.
However, he noted that the present administration in Kaduna State has given teachers a listening ear.
“The fight l fought in Kaduna State has come and gone. Today, we have a listening governor, whom before taking decision will listen and if you advised him, he will take your advice.
“We were not having such in Kaduna, we had a terror who was seen to be a governor that does not forgive,” he added.
