The Nasarawa State House of Assembly, NSHA, has strongly condemned the recent attack on the Katakpa community in Toto Local Government Area, LGA, by suspected militia.
During the plenary session on Tuesday in Lafia, the House directed the state government to provide relief materials for displaced residents of the community and urged Governor Abdullahi Sule to collaborate with the military to establish a military base in the area to address the recurring attacks by unknown gunmen.
The call for a military presence came after Ibrahim Abdullahi Saโad, representing the Ugya/Umaisha Constituency, moved a motion of urgent public importance over the attacks.
Saโad expressed deep concern over the continuous attacks and called for decisive action to prevent further occurrences.
He also appealed to the government to form a strong committee to investigate and identify the perpetrators of the attacks.
Speaking about the tragic events, Saโad recounted the devastating impact of the attacks on the Katakpa community, stating the loss of lives and destruction of property.
โMr Speaker and Honourable Colleagues, I am devastated with a heavy heart over the incident of hoodlum attacks in Katakpathe community.
โBecause of the attack last month, His Excellency called for a stakeholders security meeting and we reached an agreement.
โAgain on Sunday, 25 February, 2024, the same hoodlums came as early as 6am to attack my people of Katakpa community. They burnt houses, and destroyed properties, killing many people.
โ17 members of one family were killed, 11 members of one family again were killed as nobody can tell you how many people were killed including the village head of Katakpa Abdullahi Sadiq as a result of the attack, this is unfortunate,โ he said.
He also noted that some victims with gunshot wounds are receiving treatment at General Hospital, Umaisha, and Federal Medical Centre in Keffi.
Saโad, who said he has personally provided relief materials and supported the payment of medical bills, appealed for further assistance from the state government and relevant authorities.
