OsunDailyNG looks at the top happenings making headlines on the front pages of Nigeria’s national newspapers today Monday 28th August 2023.

The PUNCH: The release of huge volumes of water from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon has made states along the path of River Benue in Nigeria brace up for possible flood disasters in their various domains. To prevent deaths and other disasters associated with floods, states that are likely to be affected have asked residents of the flood-prone areas to vacate such communities.

The Guardian: Exactly how many Nigerians are unemployed is a question nobody may be able to find an accurate answer for in the foreseeable future. This is because Nigeria’s hyped unemployment rate dropped last Thursday, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), government’s agency saddled with the responsibility of coming up with the most accurate figure.

ThisDay: After a three-day retreat in Kigali, Rwanda, for the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), facilitated by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Nigerian governors said effective leadership was in high demand in Africa. They acknowledged that Nigeria was battling a huge trust deficit, saying there is need for dialogue to find a lasting solution to the problem.

The Nation: President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has described as unsustainable servicing the nation’s debt with 90 per cent of its revenue. It will be reversed, he said.

Daily Trust: A potential shock to Nigeria’s short-term economic stability bordering on the size of the country’s foreign reserves seems to have been averted. Just as Nigerians were trying hard to come to terms with the puzzle posed by the Consolidated and Separate Financial Statements for last year of the Central Bank of Nigeria, with regards to a debt of $15 billion said to be owed to two international banks, another puzzle, probably as disturbing, emerged.

Thank you for reading, that is all for today, see you again tomorrow for a review of Nigerian newspapers.
