OsunDailyNG looks at the top happenings making headlines on the front pages of Nigeria’s national newspapers today Monday 10th July 2023.
The PUNCH: Expectations on the ministerial list have heightened as President Bola Tinubu clocks over 40 days in office. By law, Tinubu is required to name his cabinet within 60 days after taking the oath of office on May 29 and transmits it to the Senate for confirmation. With less than 18 days to submit his cabinet list to the National Assembly as recommended by the constitution, lawmakers and other Nigerians are anxiously waiting for the list of ministers who would help to deliver the President’s renewed hope agenda.
The Guardian: As the jostle for ministerial list reaches the home stretch, there are strong indications that no fewer than five former governors will feature in the president’s list of nominees that is heading to the Senate for approval between now and next week. The unusual list, already dubbed the ‘cabinet of (political) unity’, will have nominees drawn from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and many technocrats.
The Nation: President Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday in Bissau, the capital of Guinea Bissau, urged leaders of the West Africa sub-region to work for peace and defend democracy. He reflected on the threat to peace in the sub-region, which has reached an alarming proportion with terrorism, and the military incursion into politics. Tinubu was unanimously elected as chair of the 16-nation Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) at the 63rd Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of States/Governments of the sub-region, the first he attended as Nigerian leader.
Daily Trust: Stakeholders in the rice value chain have identified insufficient paddy rice and poor irrigation that are hindering all-year-round farming as the major factors responsible for the high cost of local rice in the country. They also listed the near absence of mechanisation, insecurity and the high cost of inputs as some of the causes.
