The Nigerian Government has berthed the largest container vessel on Lekki Deep Seaport.

The Nigerian Port Authority disclosed this through its official X account on Sunday.

The vessel measuring 367M in length overall, christened โ€œMaersk Edirneโ€, has a Breadth of 48.2.

The statement added that the vessel carrying a Gross Registered Tonnage (GRT) of 142,131metric tonnes and a Deadweight Tonnage (DWT) of 147,340 metric tonnes, constituting 3,376 total cargo onboard, was navigated to safety on Sunday.

Speaking on the development, the Managing Director of NPA declared the countryโ€™s readiness to harness the potentials of marine and blue Economy.

โ€œThe Authority under my watch is poised to provide the leadership and technical guidance required to maximize the potentials inherent in our marine and blue economy,โ€ he said.

OsunDailyNG gathered that before the berthing of Maersk Edirne, the largest commercial vessels to sail on Nigerian waters were โ€œMV Stadelhornโ€ and โ€œMSC Maureenโ€ at Onne Port and TinCan Island Port Complexes, respectively.

However, the development comes as industrial experts and Nigerians have continued to call for developing ports across the country, including the Onne and Port-Harcourt ports in Rivers State, the Warri Port, and the Calabar Port.
