The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has debunked reports that the National Grid suffered its first collapse of 2025 on Saturday, 11th January.

A statement signed by the TCN Public Affairs Manager, Ndidi Mbah, and made available to OsunDailyNG on Saturday, said what was incorrectly described as a grid collapse was actually a tripping of the Osogbo-Ihovbor and Benin-Omotosho lines, which only impacted the bulk supply to the Lagos area.

The statement noted that just before the tripping, total generation on the grid was 4,335.63MW, and after the trippings, however, generation was 2,573.23MW, showing that the grid did not experience a collapse.

Mbah added in the statement that all tripped lines have been restored except for the Benin โ€“ Omotosho 330kV line whose restoration is ongoing.

He cautioned against spreading false information to the public deliberately.

โ€œThe Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, hereby states that the nationโ€™s grid did not experience any collapse today, contrary to the widely published misinformation in the media.

โ€œEarlier today, at about 13:41Hrs, the Osogbo โ€“ Ihovbor line tripped, followed by the tripping of the Benin โ€“ Omotosho line. These consequently affected bulk supply to only Lagos axis alone.

โ€œIt is important to clarify that at about 13:00 Hrs, today, just before the tripping, total generation on the grid was 4,335.63MW. After the trippings, however, generation was 2,573.23MW, showing clearly that the grid did not experience a collapse.

โ€œThe transmission line tripping affected Egbin, Olorunsogo, Omotosho, Geregu, and Paras, but these have all been restored except for the Benin โ€“ Omotosho 330kV line whose restoration is ongoing.

โ€œAs TCN continues to work hard to put in place a robust transmission grid, inspite of prevailing challenges. It is imperative that we understand the negative impact of deliberately misinforming the public and the value of disseminating true and verifiable facts,โ€ the statement read.
