A Chief Magistrate Court in Lafia, Nasarawa State, has scheduled January 31 for the hearing on the application to review the bail conditions granted to 30 suspected violent protesters and eight others currently remanded at the Correctional Centre.

The protesters were arraigned and detained after being arrested by Nigeria Police operatives for an alleged breach of the peace pact related to the gubernatorial election tussle, where the Supreme Court delivered a judgment in favor of Governor Abdullahi Sule on Friday, January 19.

Magistrate Mohammed Abdullahi-Lanze, presiding over the case, had initially granted bail to the accused persons on Wednesday, January 24.

However, a Lafia-based legal practitioner and defense counsel, Barrister Ayiwulu Baba Ayiwulu, expressed dissatisfaction with the stringent bail conditions and subsequently applied to the court for a review.

In a statement on Monday, Ayiwulu stated the purpose of the application, saying, โ€œWe have petitioned the court to review the initial order requiring each defendant to produce a director and fulfill other bail requirements.

โ€œWe proposed a new bail bond arrangement, suggesting that Hon. Esson Mairiga, the House Committee Chairman on Judiciary, has agreed to stand as the surety for all the women.

โ€œJustice will prevail, and the rights of these women will be duly acknowledged.โ€
