The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has elected a new leadership following an election of the association held in Abuja last week.

The associationโ€™s national convention started last Wednesday and was concluded in the early hours of Saturday morning at the Federal Capital Territory.

The election, which was riddled with crisis, led to the death of some students while many others are still bedridden at the National Hospital in Abuja, as of the time of filing this report.

Sources who participated in the process told DAILY POST that the election was mainly between two candidates from Delta State.

It further explained that the event became bloody when their supporters clashed at the Old Parade Ground, Central Business District, beside the Defence Headquarters in Abuja.

Trending videos on social media showed that gunshots from non-security agents rented the air on Thursday and Friday at the election ground.

Our correspondent gathered that after hours of gun battle, normalcy was restored to the election venue around 7:30 pm on Friday, and the election eventually commenced.

Accreditation and voting were held throughout the night, after which Comrade Emonefe Lucky emerged as President, while Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez emerged as the Senate President and Oladimeji Uthman as the Clerk of the house, among others.

โ€œWe shall closely monitor, analyse, and scrutinise government policies as they relate to the general well-being of the students and the greater welfare of the Nigerian citizenry before coming up with our position on governance. Strictly speaking, our NANS is NANS for the studentsโ€™ interests alone.

โ€œAs a flow from the above, we hereby make a passionate appeal to Mr President to approve a national annual bursary of N200,000 to all Nigerians irrespective of their creed or tribe,โ€ Lucky said on Arise TV after his election.

The Federal Government, through the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Student Engagement, Asefon Sunday, congratulated the new executive members charging them to work with his office for the benefit of Nigerian students.

In a statement posted on his X handle, Asefon said, โ€œI extend my sincere congratulations to you, Comr. Emonefe Lucky of College of Education Warri, Delta State, Comr Akinteye Babatunde Afeez (Babtee) as the new President-Elect and Senate President-Elect respectively,

โ€œLet your actions and decisions reflect high standards of NANS and always strive to serve its members with dedication and integrity. May your tenure be filled with success, collaboration, and transformative initiatives that uplift the entire student body.โ€
