An angry mob on Wednesday assaulted a middle-aged woman, identified as Rabiatu, for allegedly stealing a packet of seasoning at Abaji main market, Abuja.
A witness said the incident happened around 10:03 am when the woman, who pretended to be buying some items at an open shop inside the market, allegedly picked a packet of seasoning and hid it inside her hijab.
According to the witness, another man selling items close to the next shop saw when the woman picked up the seasoning pack and hid it.
“Actually, the woman earlier bought salt, sugar and Maggi but while the owner of the shop was busy attending to other customers, she picked another pack of Maggi and hid it not knowing that there was someone watching her,” the witness said.
He said the woman was about to leave the market when the alarm was raised by a neighbour, saying the woman denied picking the extra Maggi.
However, some women who were buying items at the shop were ordered to search the woman and in the process, the packet of Maggi was found hidden inside her hijab.
This incident attracted the attention of people, who tried to descend on her but were prevented by some vigilantes who arrived at the scene and led her out of the market.
