Former Education Minister, Oby Ezekwesili, has accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of assaulting Nigeriaโ€™s democracy.

Ezekwesili claimed Akpabio is trying to destroy Nigeriaโ€™s democracy, hence shouldnโ€™t have emerged as Senate President.

She was reacting to the uproar in the senate over the appointment of Minority Leaders yesterday.

A mild drama occurred after Akpabio named Senator Abba Morro (PDP Benue South) the new Senate Minority Leader and Senator Osita Ngwu (PDP Enugu West) as the Minority Whip.

They replaced senators Simon Mwadkwon, who was formerly representing Plateau North, and Darlington Nwokocha, who represented Abia Central.

While Mwadkwon, former Minority Leader is a PDP member; Nwokocha of the Labour Party, LP, was the Minority Whip.

Immediately after the Senate President announced the new Minority leaders, there was uproar on the floor of the Red Chamber as some LP senators opposed the announcement.

The aggrieved senators complained that the nomination was unfair to other political parties comprising the minority in the senate.

Anambra North Senator, Tony Nwoye, who rejected the nomination, yelled at Akpabio, saying โ€œAre we your slaves, how can you be choosing minority leaders for us?โ€

Reacting, Ezekwesili said Akpabio and some โ€œpolitical classโ€ are trying to monopolize Nigeriaโ€™s democracy.

Posting on X, she wrote: โ€œOur sharply declining Nigerian Democracy was apparently further assaulted by @Senator_Akpabio who should never have been answering the title of Senator not to talk of โ€œSenate Presidentโ€ were it not for the rottenness of the countryโ€™s Judiciary @NGCourtofAppea that has obviously thrown caution to the wind and allowed itself to be corrupted and captured by decadent politicians. Mr Akpabio is regrettably caught up in the web of Hubris.

โ€œWe should remind him and his band of Destroyers of Democracy the wise and legendary words of Marianne Williamson:

โ€œEmpires always have the hubris to think they are indestructible, when in fact they are always unsustainable.

โ€œMeanwhile, it was hopeful to see Opposition Party voices finally doing what Democracy demands of them. Kudos to
@SenatorNwoye @ireti_kingibe and other Labor Party Senators.

โ€œRaise your Collective Voice on all matters that affect the Citizens who elected you into office as Lawmakers @nassnigeria

โ€œIt was what we expected of you on those egregious Luxury SUVs you collected or are waiting to collect.

โ€œYou folks with the Peopleโ€™s Mandate can still lead the way out of the entrapment by this โ€œMonopoly Democracyโ€ of a political class rascality that is now exemplified by Mr Akpabio and his ilk.โ€
