Police Operatives have reportedly apprehended one Hassan Azeez, popularly known as Saudi, for setting his wife ablaze in the wee hours of yesterday morning.

OsunDaily News understands that the incident occurred in Ibogun Olaogun, Abeokuta which coincidentally happens to be the hometown of a former president of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo.

Sources told The Nation that the suspect accused his wife, Olayinka of delaying his breakfast in the early hours of the morning.

The wife had told him that she would serve him food after she was done with her morning chores.

However, this did not sit well with the accused who was said to have gotten into a heated squabble with his wife during which he allegedly poured petrol on her and set her ablaze.

The incident caused pandemonium in the community as Azeez allegedly warned residents against any attempt to intervene in the matter.

โ€œA male passer-by, who was touched by the womanโ€™s plight, had one of his legs burnt while he was trying to save the woman,โ€ a source said.

The mother of one was eventually rescued by some residents who asked her husband to take her to the hospital for medical care.

Azeez instead hired a nurse to take care of Olayinka at home.

Her condition deteriorated and residents contacted her father, Pa Akintade, who lives in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Olayinka has since been moved to a hospital in Ibadan, Oyo State, where doctors are battling to save her life.

Azeez was said to have fled after the matter was reported to Ibogun Police Division.

The victimโ€™s father stated that the doctors attending to his daughter demanded a sum of N1.5 million for urgent surgery.

He said: โ€œAzeez did not request for my daughterโ€™s hand in marriage and he is not ready to do anything according to Yoruba marriage tradition.

โ€œSome specialist doctors who came to examine my daughter at the hospital where she is being treated said we would have to provide a sum of N1.5 million to carry out a surgery on her body because her hands and other parts of her body have been severely burnt and contorted.โ€

When the aforementioned publication contacted, the spokesman for Ogun Police Command, Mr Abimbola Oyeyemi, he said that operatives were on the trail of Azeez.

โ€œIt is true. We are still on his trail,โ€ Oyeyemi said.
