The Lagos government, through its Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA), on Tuesday called for more attention on boys.

Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, DSVA executive secretary, made the call to commemorate the โ€˜International Day of the Boy Childโ€™ in some schools in the state.

The celebration was held through the agencyโ€™s Kings Club Initiative at Agidingbi Grammar School (Junior and Senior), Ojodu Junior High School, Babs Fafunwa Memorial Senior Secondary School, Ikeja Junior College, Bolade Junior Grammar School, Unity Junior High School, Immaculate Senior High School, and Mende Junior/Senior High School.

The agency representatives were at the schools to speak with the students about mental health issues.

Ms Vivour-Adeniyi said there was a need to create awareness to draw more attention to the boy child.

According to her, there is a need to focus on their well-being and their need to feel happy, healthy, and valued within the family and the community.

This yearโ€™s May 16 โ€˜International Day of the Boy Childโ€™ has the theme โ€˜Boys Cry Tooโ€™.

Ms Vivour-Adeniyi said that โ€˜Boy Child Dayโ€™ was founded in 2018 by Jerome Teelucksingh, a university lecturer from the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.

โ€œIn a letter to government leaders and NGOs, Teelucksingh said that in the media, there are regular incidents in which young, misguided boys and teenagers are involved in crime and violence. If a boy child is neglected or fed a diet of hate and violence, it is obvious he will develop into a teenager who is misguided and confused,โ€ Ms Vivour-Adeniyi explained. โ€œThere is an urgent need to focus on the home and school in order to save the boy child.โ€

The DSVA boss also mentioned that it was important that parents, guardians and teachers in various communities and schools equipped the boy child accordingly, as this would have a greater impact on them in the near future.ย
