Nigerian singer Damini Ogulu also known as Burna Boy has come under heavy criticism for making โdegradingโ remarks about Afrobeats.
OsunDailyNG reports that the โLast Lastโ crooner during a recent interview with Apple Musicโs Zane Lowe in New York described Afrobeats as basically โnothingโ with no substance.
He said: โAfrobeats as people call it is mostly about nothing, literally nothing. Thereโs no substance to it. Nobody is talking about anything. Itโs just a great time, itโs an amazing time.โ
The singerโs remark did not sit well with many lovers of Afrobeats across the country who called him out for diminishing the experiences and Afrobeat music of other singers.
Reacting to the Burnaโs remark, one user, Larry via Twitter handle said: โDear Burna Boy, you donโt need to downplay other peopleโs crafts just because you sampled your way to the top.โ
Rahliata Musa said: โNo be your fault. What substance does his songs have too?โ
Wayup wrote: โAfter benefitting from the genre youre here talking rubbish. What do you mean thereโs no susbance in Afrobeats? Why didnt you start your career with Rap or HipHop since you think Afrobeats has no substance. Ungrateful preek.โ
