Governor Abba Kabir Yusufโs government of Kano State has declared an indefinite postponement of the resumption date for primary and post-primary schools for the 2024/2025 academic year.
The government cited โurgent reasonsโ for this action, though no specific information was provided.
The Director of Public Enlightenment at the Kano State Ministry of Education, Balarabe Kiru, announced the delay in a statement issued on Saturday,
He noted that the Commissioner for Education, Umar Doguwa, will soon announce a revised resumption date.
Kiru stated, โI wish to inform pupils, students, and parents that the previously scheduled resumption dates of September 8 and 9, 2024, have been postponed.
โThis decision is based on urgent reasons aimed at enhancing the learning environment for our children. A new date for resumption will be communicated in due course.โ
Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticised the Edo State Governmentโs move to indefinitely suspend the resumption date for schools in the state over the fuel price hike.
OsunDailyNG reports that the Permanent Secretary in the state Ministry of Education, Ojo Akin-Longe, via a memo, announced the postponement of Sept.9, the earlier scheduled date until further notice.
Reacting to the development while speaking to newsmen, the Publicity Secretary of the APC, Peter Uwadiae-Enosorogbe, described the decision as โexpensive political gimmickryโ
He expressed shock that the state government was willing to sacrifice the educational pursuit of the children for politics.
โYou cannot sacrifice the education pursuit of the children for fuel scarcity. It is not today we are having a hike in fuel price. This cannot derail the educational system.
โNobody is protesting the hike and no parents have complained that they cannot take their children to school for learning. This is not adding up.
โTo every reasonable and rational individual, the government has erred again. It is one of the mistakes of the state government.
โIt is not in the interest of the children; it is not in the interest of the parents and it is not in the interest of the educational system,โ he said.
Uwadiae-Enosorogbe subsequently called for reversing the decision, saying the state education had suffered a lot under the incumbent administration.
According to him, the statistics of performance for the recently released results of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) ranked Edo 26th against 1st and 2nd positions in the past.
