Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal has requested additional relief support from the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons for affected victims of banditry and disaster in the state.

A statement issued by the spokesperson to the governor, Sulaiman Bala Idris, noted that the request became imperative given the refugee commissionโ€™s role in providing relief to those affected by disasters.

According to the statement, the governor made the request during a courtesy visit to Tijjani Aliyu Ahmed, the Federal Commissioner of the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons.

โ€œThe purpose of Governor Lawalโ€™s visit to the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons was to explore additional ways to assist those affected by banditry in Zamfara Stateโ€, the statement said.

โ€œDuring the visit, Governor Lawal appealed to the Commission to prioritise Zamfara State due to the ongoing insecurity which they are in dire need for humanitarian assistance, and requested that the Hon. Commissioner consider extending the refugee resettlement cities constructed in Gusau to other zones of the state.โ€

According to the statement, due to limited resources, the governor emphasised the need for partnerships and collaborations in mitigating the sufferings of over 2,000 refugees in Zamfara State.

Responding, the Commissioner of the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons, Ahmed, promised the the Commission will continue providing support to Persons of Concern in Zamfara and other states battling insecurity.

The Federal Commissioner commended the Zamfara governor for being the first Executive Governor to visit the Commission since he assumed office. โ€œI sincerely thank you. This shows your high level of commitment.

โ€œIt is an honour that you have taken the time to visit us, which demonstrates your commitment to the well-being of your people. We have heard your request for additional support. As a result, the Commission will ensure that you do not leave empty-handed,โ€ the commissioner said.
