The House of Representatives has announced the passing of Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga, the Deputy Chief Whip and representative of the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency in Ogun State.

OsunDailyNG gathered that she passed away on January 15, 2025, after a brief illness.

In a statement by the House Spokesperson, Rep. Akin Rotimi, Onanuga, born on December 2, 1965, was lauded as a visionary leader and dedicated public servant who passionately advocated for her constituents.

Onanuga was first elected to the House in 2019 under the All Progressives Congress (APC) platform. During her tenure in the 9th Assembly, she chaired the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development, where she advocated for policies that empower women and enhance social welfare.

Re-elected in 2023, Onanuga ascended to the position of Deputy Chief Whip in the 10th Assembly. In this capacity, she demonstrated exceptional leadership, maintaining legislative discipline and fostering unity among her colleagues.

The statement reads, โ€œAffectionately known as โ€˜Ijaya,โ€™ Rep. Onanugaโ€™s intellect, passion, humility, and drive for excellence earned her admiration among her colleagues and constituents alike. Her impactful contributions to Nigeriaโ€™s political landscape reflected her passion for creating a better society and her tireless dedication to public service.

โ€œWe extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, associates, the Government and People of Ogun State โ€“ particularly the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North constituency โ€“ and the entire membership of the National Assembly. As we mourn the loss of this vibrant and committed lawmaker, whose life was devoted to improving the lives of Nigerians โ€“ especially her constituents โ€“ her legacy of service and dedication will continue to inspire future generations.

โ€œFuneral arrangements will be announced by her family in due course. May her soul rest in perfect peace, and may her legacy continue to inspire generations to come.โ€
