A rights group in Zamfara State has appealed to Governor Dauda Lawal to ensure the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) law is fully implemented in the state.
The group, Baobab for Womenโs Human Rights made the call in Gusau, at a rally to mark the 16 Days Activism Against GBV.
The coordinator of the group, Hajia Rabi Ibrahim also appealed for collaborative efforts in tackling the increasing number of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) cases in the state.
โThe escalating rate of GBV cases in the state remained so worrisome and perplexing for all stakeholdersโ, she added.
โWe are appealing to the State government to ensure the full implementation of (VAPP) law in Zamfara Stateโ
โThe VAPP law had already been domesticated in the State by the previous administrationโ
โWe are now appealing for the full implementation of the law, as we all know the content of the law has a greater role to play in the fight against GBVโ
โThis yearโs awareness campaigns, we are targeting men and boys who are mostly perpetrators of GBV in societyโ
According to her, GBV has negative effects on humanity, saying that there is a need for collaborative efforts to tackle the menace.
Also speaking, the Secretary, Zamfara Social Protection Platform (ZSPP), a Civil Society Organisation, Mr Yusuf Yahaya, called on parents and guardians to take care of their children to prevent them from being affected by GBV.
Yahaya expressed worry that the high rate of SGBV in schools is worrisome, urging the school management to initiate measures to tackle the menace in their respective schools.
The Executive Director, Voluntary Aid Initiative, Musa Umar, however, urged the State Ministry of Justice and security agencies to ensure speedy prosecution of the perpetrators of GBV.
