The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and the Niger State Government have signed four project agreements with the aim of promoting a green economy, with a target of planting one billion trees over eight years.
NNPCL disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday.
As part of its commitment to climate protection and carbon sequestration to achieve its 2030 net-zero targets, NNPCL plans to plant 135 million trees on 100,000 hectares of land.
Other aspects of Nigeria’s green economy objectives, spearheaded by the Niger state government in collaboration with NNPCL, include a Greenfield Hydroelectric power project, Mega Solar parks in institutions, and home solar systems for 250,000 households out of the 800,000 households in Niger state. Additionally, there are plans for a 500 million liters Ethanol Plant with associated cropping of Maize/Sugarcane/Sweet Sorghum on 100,000 hectares of land in Niger state to produce over 500,000 tons of crops to feed the ethanol plant.
This development follows a two-day green economy summit hosted by Niger state, focusing on ‘Sustainable Future: Harnessing Green Assets Innovation for Niger State’s Development.’
