In a bold move to address food security challenges, Osun State Governor Sen. (Dr) Ademola Nurudeen Jackson Adeleke has unveiled a comprehensive agricultural support package. This initiative aims to boost sustainable agriculture and enhance food production across the state, marking a significant step towards ensuring a stable food supply for residents. The governor’s proactive approach aligns with national efforts to strengthen food security and promote agricultural development.
The newly announced program targets diverse agricultural stakeholders, from small-scale farmers to large agricultural enterprises. It includes measures to improve access to modern farming techniques, provide financial support, and establish a state-wide food security portal. This multifaceted approach is set to have a far-reaching impact on Osun’s economy, potentially creating jobs and boosting rural development. As the initiative unfolds, it promises to transform the agricultural landscape of Osun State and contribute to the broader goal of national food security.
Governor Adeleke’s agricultural support package includes a substantial investment of N8 billion for tractors and farm clearing equipment, along with N2 billion for farm input support. The initiative aims to boost food production and ensure food security in Osun State. The package includes the distribution of 6,000 herbicides, 80,000 cashew seedlings, 8,000 cassava cuttings, 8,000 vegetable seeds, and 500 bags of lime to farmers, women associations, and people with disabilities. Additionally, 31 newly purchased tractors with full implements will be made available to farmers’ cooperative societies and associations. The governor has also announced plans to empower primary and secondary schools with vegetables and arable seeds for planting, integrating them into the food security value chain.
Governor Adeleke’s initiative aims to include a wide range of agricultural stakeholders. The program seeks to support various groups, from small-scale farmers to large agricultural enterprises. It also extends to often-overlooked segments, such as the Persons with Disabilities Farmers Association (PWDFA). They seek farm settlements in each local government area and equal opportunities given to regular farmers. The initiative also targets women’s associations and schools, integrating them into the food security value chain. This inclusive approach aligns with the state’s goal to achieve sustainable food security, alleviate poverty, and foster inclusive economic growth.
