In a swift response to public outcry over a controversial sentencing, Governor Ademola Adeleke has directed an immediate investigation and initiated pardoning actions regarding the case of a young man sentenced to death by hanging for stealing a fowl in Osun State.
In an official statement released on Tuesday evening, the Governor acknowledged the gravity of the case and called for intervention from the Attorney General’s office to facilitate the young man’s inclusion in the prerogative of mercy list before the end of the year.
โI have read about the case. I recognize the separation of powers in our democracy. In this particular case, I have directed the Commissioner for Justice to initiate processes to grant the prerogative of mercy to the young man,โ Governor Adeleke stated in the press release.
Emphasizing the principles of justice and equity that Osun State upholds, he added, โOsun is a land of justice and equity. We must ensure fairness and protection of the sanctity of lives.โ
