In a critical meeting held today with top British diplomats, Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State decried the unlawful occupation of local government councils, accusing Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun of colluding with the All Progressives Congress (APC) to impose illegality across the state.
Speaking to the delegation led by Deputy High Commissioner Mr. Jonny Baxter, Governor Adeleke expressed grave concerns regarding the current state of democracy in Nigeria, labeling the actions of the IGP as a โserious threatโ to the democratic process. He stated, โIt is unfortunate and a disservice to democracy that the Inspector General of Police is colluding with the APC to enforce a non-existing court order.โ
As Osun prepares for local government elections this Saturday, the Governor reiterated his commitment to ensuring a peaceful election process while lamenting the interference of security forces that are reportedly aiding and abetting violations of democratic norms. โYou are in my state at a critical juncture in our political life. We face an existential threat to our democratic life from those who should protect democracy,โ Adeleke remarked.
He recounted the unfortunate incidents where security personnel were alleged to have supported opposition members in breaking into local government secretariats, further heightening tensions in the state. โOur local government election is holding on Saturday. Our people are ready for elections. We will not allow democracy to be destroyed,โ he affirmed.
Governor Adeleke also urged the diplomatic community to pay close attention to what he termed the โrape of democracyโ unfolding in Osun State, stressing that all stakeholders must abide by the rule of law. โThere is no room for self-help,โ he cautioned.
In addition to addressing the political climate, the Governor highlighted significant advancements in Osunโs infrastructure and economic management, noting a 40% reduction in infrastructure deficits and state debt, alongside improved welfare for workers and pensioners.
During the meeting, British Deputy High Commissioner Jonny Baxter echoed the Governorโs sentiments regarding the need for upholding democratic processes and the rule of law. He urged all political actors to prioritize peace and dialogue over conflict, reinforcing that Nigeria remains a key partner to the UK.
โThe importance of law enforcement remaining neutral cannot be overstated, and political disputes should always be resolved through lawful channels,โ Baxter asserted, emphasizing the role of diplomacy in fostering stability.
The meeting concluded with a commitment from both parties to encourage adherence to democratic values as Osun gears up for what Governor Adeleke hopes will be free and fair elections this weekend.
