Governor Dikko Umaru Radda of Katsina State has signed into law the Violence Against Persons Prohibition, VAPP, and Child Protection Laws, marking a significant step towards a safer and more just society for all.

The signing ceremony, held at the Katsina Government House, was followed by the immediate inauguration of a steering committee, demonstrating the stateโ€™s unwavering commitment to tackling the critical issue of gender-based violence, GBV.

Governor Radda emphasised the crucial role these laws play in ensuring equality, safety, and justice for all Katsina residents. He stressed the urgency of eradicating GBV and protecting the rights of vulnerable groups, particularly women and children.

The newly established steering committee, comprising representatives from government bodies, civil society organisations, and advocacy groups, signifies a collaborative approach to addressing this complex issue.

โ€œThis committee marks our unwavering commitment to dismantling the pervasive problem of GBV within our state,โ€ declared Governor Radda.

He urged committee members to champion the cause and lead the relentless fight against this social menace.

Drawing from Islamic principles and the rich cultural heritage of the Hausa-Fulani people, Governor Radda highlighted the stark contrast between GBV and cherished religious and cultural values. He urged for collective responsibility to eradicate this violation from societyโ€™s fabric.

Recognising the immense influence of religious and traditional leaders, Governor Radda called for their close collaboration and support. He emphasised the importance of community engagement, acknowledging the vital role these leaders play in mobilising support for the cause.

Expressing confidence in the leadership of the Commissioner of Women Affairs, Governor Radda directed her to establish essential bodies to address GBV issues comprehensively. He stressed the need for a coordinated approach to effectively tackle this widespread problem.

Radda commended the Katsina State House of Assembly for swiftly passing the VAPP Act, acknowledging its crucial role in combating all forms of violence.

โ€œThis act symbolises our unwavering commitment to building a society where every individual can live free from fear,โ€ he stated.

The Katsina governor reaffirmed his governmentโ€™s zero-tolerance policy towards GBV. He vowed to build a Katsina State where the rights and dignity of every individual are protected and cherished.

The Chief Judge of Katsina State, Justice Musa Danladi Abubakar, assured the governor of the Judiciaryโ€™s full support in expediting the resolution of GBV and child abuse cases.
