President Bola Tinubu began a historic three-day visit to France on Thursday, marking a Nigerian leaderโs first official state visit in over 20 years.
The visit, aimed at bolstering economic partnerships between France and Nigeria, underscores Parisโs effort to renew its ties with Africaโs largest economy amid changing dynamics on the continent.
French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed Tinubu at Parisโs iconic Invalides memorial complex. The event commenced with the national anthems of both countries echoing through the courtyard, setting the stage for discussions on deepening bilateral relations.
Describing the visit as an โopportunity to deepen the already dynamic relationship between France and Nigeria,โ Macronโs office emphasized the potential for increased cooperation in various sectors.
Nigeria, Africaโs leading oil producer and home to the robust Nollywood film industry presents significant opportunities for France.
However, challenges such as insecurity, corruption, and widespread poverty โ with over 129 million Nigerians living below the poverty line โ continue to hinder progress.
For Nigeria, grappling with soaring inflation and food prices, the visit represents an opportunity to attract foreign investment and strengthen economic ties.
Tinubuโs office highlighted areas of interest, including โagriculture, security, education, health, youth engagement, innovation, and energy transition.โ Both leaders will discuss shared priorities in finance, solid minerals, trade, and investment.
โThis trip is pivotal for Nigeria as we seek to collaborate with France in addressing our economic and developmental challenges,โ Tinubuโs office said in a statement.
Since his election in 2017, Macron has pursued a โrenewalโ in France-Africa relations, seeking stronger ties with English-speaking African countries like Nigeria.
The move comes as Franceโs influence wanes in parts of the continent due to military coups and shifting political dynamics.
Macron and Tinubu are expected to explore partnerships that could enhance Nigeriaโs agricultural productivity, strengthen its security architecture, and promote innovation in energy and communication.
