The Abia State government has commenced the construction of a flood control system in Umumukwu Nkata Ibeku community in Umuahia North LGA, to save residents from further damage.
The project, which is aimed at tackling perennial flooding in the area, would also be used to reclaim parts of the road around the site, which were destroyed by erosion.
The flood menace area, popularly known as Danger zone by some indigenes and other residents of the Nkata, had in the past rainy seasons, claimed some lives including those of children sent on errands and also destroyed some buildings and economic trees.
Also, the drainage system previously constructed through communal efforts to checkmate the menace had, due to the water current, become weak.
Some residents of Umumukwu Nkata including Mr Steven Ibeabuchi and Mrs Josephine Chigere told Journalists that some residents and other non-residents of the area had died in the erosion site but expressed relief that the Abia State government came to their aid.
In a related development, the state government has commenced the reconstruction of Dozie Way and Umuafai-Lodu roads in Umuahia, which were destroyed by flood.
