The family of the late Joseph Agabaidu, who was fatally stabbed to death last Saturday in an attempted phone theft in Bauchi State, has alleged negligence by the Abubakar Tafawa-Balewa Teaching Hospital, ATBUTH.

Godwin, the immediate younger brother of the deceased, claimed in an exclusive interview with DAILY POST on Monday that his brother was not given immediate attention after he was admitted to the Emergency and Trauma Unit of the hospital.

His words: โ€ My brother was stabbed by some hoodlums along the Yelwa axis. He was first rushed to the school clinic around 7 pm. It was from there that he was referred to the teaching hospital but no one attended to him till 2 am.

โ€œThe death of my brother was due to the poor management of the hospital. I noticed there were only two staff on ground at the time my brother was admitted, so they were not able to manage the situation effectively. They didnโ€™t attend to him on time.โ€

However, when contacted, the Public Relations Officer of ATBUTH, Usman Koli, told DAILY POST that the management of ATBUTH has commenced an investigation into the matter and will get back to our reporter.

โ€ We have a committee that handles this kind of issue. So the committee has been briefed on these allegations and they have started their investigations. We will get back to you soon.โ€

DAILY POST recalls that the Bauchi Police Command report revealed that the late Agabaidu, a 500-level Geology student at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University until his death, was fatally stabbed while attempting to retrieve his girlfriendโ€™s handbag from suspected armed robbers.

According to the police, the suspected armed robbers snatched the girlfriendโ€™s handbag, leading to the tragic confrontation.

The incident reportedly occurred at about 7 pm on Saturday, December 9, as he returned to his Yelwa lodge in a suburb of Bauchi.

It was gathered that despite efforts to secure medical assistance, the victim reportedly died from the injuries sustained from the attack.

The final-year student is identified as the eldest of four siblings from his family, all enrolled at ATBU.

Irked by the death of their fellow student, ATBU students staged a peaceful protest, which was disrupted by the police, who stationed an armoured personnel carrier opposite the entrance to the institution.

The situation escalated as students closed the gate, disrupting campus activities, thereby leading to ATBU management closing the university for an initial period of one week from December 4 to 10 to prevent the breakdown of law and order.
