Former Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) in Edo State, Comrade Kaduna Eboigbodin, has tragically died following a confrontation with police officers at a roadblock in the Upper Sokponba area of Benin City.

Civil society organizations have issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the police to identify and hold accountable the officers involved in the incident, which has sparked widespread outrage.

According to Rev. David Ugolor, Executive Director of the African Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ), Eboigbodin was stopped on Monday while driving with his wife.

The police reportedly demanded his vehicle documents, which were up to date, but raised concerns over a perceived discrepancy between the carโ€™s glass engraving and its plate number.

Despite his explanations, the officers allegedly seized Eboigbodinโ€™s documents and called for a tow truck to impound his car. Tensions at the scene escalated, and the former labour leader reportedly slumped.

Witnesses said he was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. Bystanders claimed the officers fled the scene instead of offering assistance.

Reacting to the incident, the Edo State Police Command denied allegations of misconduct. The Command spokesperson, SP Moses Yamu stated, โ€œThe account shared by civil rights groups does not align with the version provided by the deceasedโ€™s wife to the authorities.โ€

Civil society groups, including ANEEJ and the Edo Civil Society Organizations (EDOSCO), have demanded accountability.

Rev. Ugolor described Eboigbodin as a dedicated leader and activist, noting his contributions as a former NLC Chairman in Edo State, National Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), and a pioneer in civil society advocacy.

Comrade Omobude Agho, Coordinator-General of EDOSCO, expressed shock, stating, โ€œThis is a loss not only to the labor movement but to all of Edo State. Kaduna Eboigbodin was a respected and honorable figure who fought tirelessly for workersโ€™ rights and justice.โ€

The groups have demanded that the police provide a detailed explanation of the incident and identify the officers involved within 48 hours.

They emphasized the need for reform within the Nigerian Police Force to prevent such occurrences and ensure accountability.

Eboigbodinโ€™s death has triggered public outrage, with labour unions, civil society organizations, and residents calling for justice.
