Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has disclosed that his deputy, Philip Shaibu, has the constitutional right to contest for governor in 2024.
Obaseki, however, disclosed that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will decide if Shaibu will be the partyโs flag bearer.
On Monday, Shaibu had officially declared his interest to contest the stateโs governorship election.
Speaking after declaring his interest, Shaibu said nobody can stop him, adding that he would defeat Obasekiโs announced candidate.
He said this amid rift with Obaseki, but the duo had settled their fight.
However, addressing journalists on Thursday, Obaseki said: โThe relationship as you know, has been cordial. He (Philip) wants to run for the office I currently occupy and he is free to.
โI think as a Nigerian, he has the constitutional right to run; nobody can or should stop him.
โThe party will decide and also members of the party will decide who will be the flag bearer of the party in the forthcoming governorship election.โ
