Eddie Hearn, the promoter of Nigerian-British heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua, has expressed doubts about the possibility of the Anthony Vs Deontay Wilder bout happening.
This is coming after it was reported that the much anticipated Anthony Vs Wilder bout which was originally planned to take place in December 2023, has been postponed.
The likelihood of Joshua facing the former WBC heavyweight champion appears to have been affected by the Joshua Vs Dillian Whyte rematch scheduled to hold on August 12, 2023.
In an interview with Boxing Social, Eddie Hearn said that the decision to hold the Joshua vs. Wilder fight in Saudi Arabia will ultimately depend on how the former two-time world champion performs against Whyte in August.
“The finalization of the Wilder fight is on hold until they (The Saudis) see what happen on August 12th and that’s the risk that we’re in,” Eddie Hearn said.
“It’s a big risk (facing Whyte), is it the right risk? We’ll find out, Joshua wanted a real fight, he wasn’t motivated to take a lesser, smaller fight, but the Wilder fight will be dependent on victory at the O2 Arena on August 12th.”
Hearn proceeded by naming a potential month for the Joshua vs. Wilder fight, but he voiced skepticism that it would take place despite plans to put Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk’s unification battle on the same card.
“I think it will be January, I’m not sure whether Fury-Usyk will get made,” Hearn noted.
