The Nigerian Union of Pensioners has raised an alarm that some members receive as little as N450 monthly from their retirement savings accounts despite the economic hardship and rising cost of living in Nigeria.
Godwin Abumisi, the National President of NUP, disclosed this in a briefing with journalists in Abuja on Thursday.
He lamented that pensioners in Nigeria are undergoing severe hardship, saying that the government does not care about the poor masses.
โIn Nigeria, the government does not think about the poor people.
โOtherwise, how can pensioners in Enugu receive as low as N450 as a monthly pension? And we have been saying this, but it seems as if we are crying wolf, but it is a reality,โ he said.
The NUP president noted the widespread issue of retirees receiving meagre pension payments, ranging from N450 to N1,000, which was particularly prevalent in the Southeastern states of Nigeria.
Abumis further detailed the monthly pension amounts received by retirees in specific states, including Borno with N4,000, Gombe with N8,000, Jigawa with N12,000, Katsina with N7,000, Kogi with N5,000, Kwara with N3,000, Niger with N4,000, and Taraba with N5,000, among others.
OsunDailyNG reports that the headline and food inflation stood at 28.92 and 32.84 per cent, respectively, in December, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.
