The Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru has ordered the immediate reconstruction of waterworks in Abakaliki capital city.
The waterworks road leads to Ebonyi River, where the state water reservoir is located.
DAILY POST gathered that the bridge linking the end of the road to the Ebonyi River was destroyed years ago, reportedly during the Biafran war.
Nwifuru had on Thursday toured the road and the reservoir and ordered that the waterworks road and the bridge be reconstructed to pave the way for the maintenance of the reservoir.
The Commissioner for Works and Transport, Stanley Mbam, who spoke to newsmen in Abakaliki, during the commencement of the reconstruction, said the clearing of the dilapidated waterworks road leading to the low-lift facility has commenced after several years of abandonment.
He stated that the reconstruction of the waterworks road project would pave the way for the real maintenance of the reservoir, such that it will supply portable water to the people of the state.
According to him: โThe clearing of the waterworks road has commenced and once we reconstruct this road, the reservoir which is meant to supply water to the people of Ebonyi State is located inside. The maintenance of the reservoir will start as soon as the road is reconstructed.
โWe are picking the design of the road and the surveyors are working and the total kilometre of the road will be made known as soon as the clearing is over.
โThis road was completely abandoned, just yesterday, the governor visited here and today work has commenced and within a short period of time the low lift will be done.
โI can confidently tell you that work has started at low lift Because of the bushy nature of the roadโ he stated.
