A businesswoman, Adenike Lawal on Wednesday sought the dissolution of her one-year-old marriage to her estranged husband, Muslim, on grounds that he is a drunk and a wife beater.

The divorce suit came up at a Mapo Grade A Customary Court in Ibadan.

Lawal, who resides in Okota area of Lagos State added that Muslim often subjected her to battery at any slightest provocation.

โ€œMy lord, once Muslim, beats her whenever he gets drunk and he does not provide for his family.

โ€œMuslim have not done much concerning our childlessness.

โ€œNot too long ago, Muslim threw out my belongings and refused to allow me into his home,โ€ Lawal stated.

However, Muslim was not in court when he was called to respond to the allegations leveled against him.

According to the courtโ€™s bailiff, hearing notices were served on him several times, but he declined the courtโ€™s appearance.

Delivering judgment, the courtโ€™s President, Mrs S.M. Akintayo held that there was no marriage to be dissolved between Lawal and Muslim because no valid traditional marriage existed between them.

According to Akintayo, the testimony given by the petitioner indicated that both of them suddenly started living or cohabiting together.

The President of the court however, granted the order restraining the respondent from harassing, threatening and interfering in the personal life of the petitioner henceforth.
